Martin O’Neill is relishing the challenge ahead of him as Sunderland manager as he looks to galvanise a dressing room that has been sucked dry of confidence and belief.
Having previously turned down the chance to manage the club he supported as a young boy, O’Neill admitted he feared he would not be given another one.
But 16 months after parting company with Aston Villa, O’Neill had no hesitation in taking the job as he spoke enthusiastically about unlocking the true potential of a club he believes have underachieved for more than half a century.
“It’s so exciting, I can hardly tell you,” said O’Neill, who was approached by former chairman Niall Quinn before Roy Keane took the job in August 2006.
“Not just because it happened to be my boyhood team. That’s beside the point, but there’s incredible passion around the place. They turn up in great numbers and I just want to be part of it.
“First of all, I’m excited about managing the club. I want to grasp that opportunity. I think I’ve got enough determination, enough drive, enough energy to make it a success. I definitely hope that’s what I’ll be able to do. We all know those ingredients might not be enough but it won’t be through a lack of trying.
